Who are you and what is your teaching experience?

My name is William Springer and I’m a grad student at the University of Colorado at Denver.  I’ve just completed the classwork for my master’s degree and will be graduating once I finish writing my thesis.  For the past four years, I have been an AVID tutor for the Aurora Public Schools, working at East Middle School and Hinkley High School. While I have tutored in all subjects, my expertise is in mathematics, so I’m usually working with students who need help with their math. My favorite branch of math is algebra.

Do you have recommendations?

Yes! I can provide recommendations from several teachers I have worked with.  I have never had an unsatisfied client.

How many students will be in a tutorial session?

Just one; my rates are for a private tutorial. However, I will also accept small groups of up to five students; this has at least three advantages.  First, it’s cheaper for you. Second, we only need to schedule only one time instead of a separate time for each student.  Finally, students may actually learn more in small groups as they challenge each other to succeed. Students do not necessarily need to be the same age, although it helps if they’re studying the same subject.

What ages do you tutor?

Any age, almost! Actually, while I have worked with students as young as five, I prefer students who are in fourth grade or higher. I also work with adults.

What subjects do you tutor?

What do you want to learn? While I’m primarily a math tutor, I can help you with most basic subjects given advance notice.  My research interest is in theoretical computer science and algorithms.

Will you tutor homeschooled students?

Yes! Many parents decide to homeschool and then find that they have difficulty teaching their own children, either because they have forgotten some of the material or just because the kids have trouble accepting a parent as teacher. I have experience working with a homeschooled student and can tutor one subject or all of them.

Can you help me prepare for the ACT/SAT/GRE?

Yes! If you need help preparing for one of these tests, I will start by having you complete a sample test to see which areas you need help in, then work off of that. I scored a perfect 800 on the math section both times I took the GRE; let me help you do the same!

You mentioned your rates a few times; what do you charge?

My rate varies based on how much actual time the tutorial will take; this includes getting to wherever we’re going to meet and any preparation I need to do in advance. For example, a student who meets me at or near my house and needs help with algebra or pre-algebra would get my lowest rate ($15/hour) while a student who needs me to come to Parker for tutoring in distributed systems would be charged more.

When do you get paid?

I expect payment (cash or check) at the end of each tutorial session.  For students who need regular tutorials (several times per week) other arrangements can be made.

Will you tutor online?

If no time and location is convenient for both of us, I can tutor online using the instant messenger program of your choice.  However, I do believe that face to face tutoring is much more effective.

Will you teach nonacademic subjects?

Try me!  While I’m no expert, I can give basic lessons on chess, racquetball, and a number of other subjects.  Just fill out a tutorial request form and let me know what you need!
